Aug 2 P.M. Husavik - Diamond Circle
In the early afternoon we steamed further into the Skjalfandi Bay and visited Husavik where we would overnight.
Our excursion this afternoon was called the Diamond Circle which included Europe‘s most powerful waterfall Dettifoss and Vesturdalur. We travelled alongside the Jokulsargljufur Glacial canyon to Vesturdalur valley and to Hljodaklettarn with the echoing cliffs. They are world known for their basalt columns that characterize the ancient lava flow.
One of the stops was at a lake so clear that you could see the duck diving and swimming under water. The horseshoe-shaped Ásbyrgi canyon has belonged to the Jökulsárgljúfur National Park since 1978, but the National Park was established 5 years earlier, in 1973.
Our next stop was Dettifoss Waterfall.
Our next stop was a short hike through Hljodaklettar (‘Echo Rocks’) which is a distinctive cluster of columnar rock formations, located by Jokulsargljufur in Vatnajokull National Park.
With some time after the tour, we checked out the grocery store and bought some snacks for those all day tours and I found a cute puffin.
After the Tea Time and Cocktail hour there was a BBQ out on deck. Music playing and what a spread of food! Meat lovers and vegetarians alike had many choices! It was poolside and with the great weather we were having it was pleasant to be out. Some people had their whale watch tours after the BBQ. (it stays light almost around the clock, so not so odd to do one at 8:15 to 11:00. I think they saw some Humpback Whales.
