April 3
Today was entirely spent on planes and in airports. We were picked up for the ride to the airport. From there we flew to Bangkok and then Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where we spend the night and fly out the next day. We left Laos at 12:45 and arrived in Bangkok around 2:50.
It was the flight from hell starting with tons of very young children running & shrieking in the waiting area and the flight was like a “Disney flight”. (noisy)
More than once on this trip we had an Issue with checking in using only passports. Jason at Asia Highlights said we didn’t need anything just to show our passports. More than one airport needed to see proof of how long we were staying and when we were leaving. We showed them our itinerary and they relented. None of our seats were together and that needed to be straightened out. So when contacted he got us record locators which helped.
We arrived in Kuala Lumpur around 8:30 and then encountered the worst hotel. The Tune Hotel KLIA-KLIA2 was at the airport so was supposed to be convenient for us since we were just spending a quick night there.
The airport hotel was not actually in the airport and not convenient at all, no matter which terminal you came in. Very hard to find with no signs in either terminal. We saw signs for other hotels. We knew it was in parking lot 2 and we looked way too long for a hotel that was in the other terminal.
We asked an attendant in the parking lot, and he didn’t speak English, so he just pointed to a bus that was outside the terminal.
We went in search (all the while pulling all of our luggage) of the bus and stopped at a window to see if anyone there knew how to get to the hotel. We were told we needed to take a train to get to the other terminal. So, we got tickets and were dumped into T-2 and still no signs. We went to their parking lot level 2 and Tom saw a sign in the other direction.
You’d think we were there, but then we had a 10-minute walk over a raised crosswalk and multiple elevators to get to the hotel. Then we crossed a street up and down steep ramps to get down and then up from street level to the hotel entrance. Phew, now that was “convenient”. Thank you, Jason!
We checked in and discussed luggage storage until we returned and found. We got our key cards and then had another 10-minute walk to the elevator that takes you into what seems like a dark dank dungeon. The key card doesn’t really open the door. One holds the key card to the reader and the other person bangs the door open. It was hot as hell since no A/C runs until you insert the key. The smell of mildew about knocked us over. Only 2 bath towels and no hand towel or wash cloth and only part of a roll of TP. The carpet was old and gross. If it wasn’t so late and we had to be up early, we just sucked it up. Other than a beautiful lobby, this hotel had nothing going for it.
They do have a shuttle that runs every 3 hours, so we made reservations to take that in the morning.
All Malaysia Air flights come in and out of Terminal 1 and the hotel is in Terminal 2, so I relayed that to Jason to hopefully help future clients. There was a lovely hotel in the terminal where we arrived that would have been convenient and got great reviews.
We rearranged luggage to leave 2 checked bags and got to bed for less than 4 hours sleep.
Tomorrow, we leave for Malaysian Borneo!
